NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Words by Mimi Velevska   In the current musical climate of ubiquitous electronica, there’s no denying that the scene is absolutely flourishing and with producers like Flume taking Aussie dance global, the elusive life of being a DJ, producer and/or performer is one that many dream of. The Australian Institute of Music has recently announced its extension of their Music Composition and Production course to Melbourne. In what seems like the most fitting city, eager musicians can excel with the help of a course which aims to educate aspiring artists to wrap their heads around both the artistic and the business sides of the industry. Senior Coordinator Gene Shill took me on a campus tour of AIM, deconstructing the course for me and opening my eyes to the impressive facilities. The two year, six trimester Bachelor of Music (Composition & Music Production) offers a hands-on experience for musicians interested in focusing on composition and production. Offering private lessons and small tutorial class sizes – fully-equipped with television screens to have Skype-call lessons – the course offers a real opportunity for students to work closely with their peers, gaining knowledge from experienced industry teachers, both locally and abroad.
