Tell us about your setup?
I’m currently rolling with a MacBook Pro, Serato Scratch Live 3 and a couple of super-fab bright yellow control vinyls.
Why does Serato Scratch Live work for you?
It basically allows me to take my entire music collection with me to each gig. This is vital for me as it encourages me to get creative, experimental and allows me to mix up the vibe on the fly. The vinyl control option is also a big plus as I originally learnt to DJ with records and enjoy the feel and control that it gives.
How did you get your first break?
About 18 months ago I was running a weekly Hip hop night at Lounge and had also just started playing at the Le Scratch parties at Laundry. Both of these events opened me up to networks of amazing, lovely and encouraging people who have blessed me with opportunities and supported me on my journey.
What can an aspiring DJ do to get noticed and respected?
Practice, practice and practice! Put love and effort into your sets and eventually you will get noticed and respected for that. I am also a firm believer in Karma – you get back what you give out – so be genuine and treat people with kindness, it really does go a long way.
How important is networking in your industry?
I’d say it’s very important, not only with people in the music industry but also with other creatives…Melbourne is full of them! Photographers, Dancers, Artists, Singers etc etc. Collaborations more often than not lead to amazing opportunities, experiences and friendships. Social media provides a great platform to meet like minded people and I’ve also found sites like Mixcloud and Soundcloud to be great tools for sharing my mixes with people I wouldn’t usually be able to reach.
What is the most exciting aspect of being a DJ?
Oooh lovely question! For me it’s seeing people feel the music I’m playing. Seeing the crowd groove or head-nod to songs that I have loved whole-heartedly since I discovered Hip hop as a early teen…the songs that I have loved, laughed and cried to.. the songs that have kept me sane. Sharing these with people and seeing them feel them.. whoa! Exciting.
What is the most important piece of advice you can give to aspiring DJs?
I think it’s essential to be true to yourself first and foremost. Play the music you absolutely love and that passion will shine through when you perform.
